Hooded Plover Chicks at Boags Rocks

Boags Rocks is where you may find the latest couple of Hooded Plover chicks for the season.

We are not encouraging wardening on this beach as there are not many people who access this site but if your interested and your careful not to disturb the chicks and parents, this beach has been successful over the last two years. Mind out for horses.

Hooded Plover update for 16 December and a Birds Australia Hooded Plover newsletter

Currently there are newly hatched Hooded Plover chicks at the Melbourne Water outfall, which is a region of National Park that has low visitation by people but dozens of horses. Despite the horses, in recent years there has been good success at raising chicks on this section of beach without wardens.

In the mean time, below is a newsletter from Birds Australia about Hooded Plover conservation. Enjoy, (may take awhile to download)

Banner painting and sad news re Moana Court chick

Unfortunately the Moana court chick didn’t make it. It was missing from Monday afternoon and currently there are no other chicks that require Wardening. Despite approaching the halfway point of the breeding season, we have yet to have a chick survive in the Mornington Peninsula National Park.

In the mean time, you may wish to put the 28th of December in your diary. On the morning of the 28th we will be holding a Banner Painting activity at the St Andrews Recreation Centre. Starting at 10 AM and finishing around midday. Feel free to join us.

Second weekend for the St Andrews Moana Court chick

The Moana Court chick was still alive Friday morning, (2nd December) which is great news. With a bit of effort and luck there is a good chance it will survive another week. If it survives more than 15 days the chances of survival is very good.

Location below. The Warden tub will be next to the banner and please put comments on the clipboard. Also, thanks to those who helped last weekend, much appreciated.

Moana Court (west) St Andrews Nov 2011

Unfortunately the Rye West chick did not make it. This year all Hooded Plover chicks in the Mornington Peninsula National Park have died.

But we do have some more chicks at St Andrews. See the map below.

Please give us a hand to keep these little birds alive. Visit the beach and try being a Warden. The warden box will be nearby the banner on weekends. Call me any time on 0403 997 831

Rye West Chick (November 2011)

Walking west from the Rye car park around 200 metrers you will see the rope fencing and signs set out by Parks Victoria.

This chick is difficult to find so please don’t get too close. Try to locate the chick from a distance.

Friends of the Hooded Plover Mornington Peninsula Inc AGM

Following is a note from the president of the Friends of the Hooded Plover re the AGM.

It is now 14 months since we incorporated and our 1st Annual General Meeting will be held at 10am Monday 14th November at the Parks Victoria Offices ,Hinton Street, Rosebud.

It has been an exciting and worthwhile 14 months and the future of our Hoodies must be better with the increasing levels of interest in their well being. We are hoping all our members will be present at our 1st  AGM to hear about the past and present challenges  our Hoodies have presented to Parks Victoria Rangers over the past 21 years.

Hoodies are now nesting all over the Mornington Peninsula; two beaches have chicks on them already.  Your support means even more today.

This meeting is for all interested people, so please bring along anyone you feel might like to involved in our Hoodies and their survival as a species.

Please find attached an AGM notice, Committee Nomination form and Membership Renewal form.

If by some terrible chance you cannot attend to vote, you may appoint a proxy to vote for you. The Secretary (Val Ford) needs to be given formal notice no later than 24 hours before the AGM and a form 3 Proxy form must be used.

Membership fees can be paid on the day and please remember to RSVP by Thursday 10th November

I hope to meet all members on the 14th to celebrate the successes we have had so far.

Koonya Chicks (and a whale)

There is said to be Hooded Plover chicks at Koonya beach, (end of Hughes Road, Blairgowrie). Malcolm is away for the weekend, so the exact location is not known but if you want to help grab a reflective jacket, (left over from a recent party?) and some binoculars.

Oh yeah, there may also be a dead whale on the beach, (just saying)

The general location is shown below.

St Andrews Chick may have died

Sometime on Saturday 29th of October, around midday the St Andrew chick may have died. This has not been confirmed but it has not been seen over three visits.

There is another chick at Rye, (see below) but there will be no wardening at this stage.
